Brendan’s Living City workshop introduces the art form frottage in which textured rubbings are used to create an art piece.
This workshop is ideal for beginners and those with more experience. You can also watch the series of videos Brendan created which explore further down. These videos explore frottage in our urban environment, green space and how to utilise the art form to inspire social change.

Brendan is a talented artist living in Blackpool. Brendan Bunting creates social and political inspired art often using recycled newspaper. His work aims to inspire and create social change and provides a commentary on issues particularly in the North West and with a focus on community and youth.
Above is Brendan’s series of videos exploring the process of frottage, textured rubbings, and collage. The videos will play back to back – you can also watch them on our YouTube channel here. Over the course of the videos he introduces the process and demonstrates how we can use this style of art to advocate for social change, repurpose our green space and find out more about our city of Preston.
In the first video in Brendan Bunting’s commission for The Living City Brendan will introduce you to the process of frottage. This video takes place in the home with Brendan introducing the creative process of frottage and using items around the home to create his piece. Anybody can take up this art form with very little equipment and the process will give you a reimagined way of viewing our surroundings.
The second video takes place in Preston city centre with Brendan showing how textures around the city we may have never noticed can build the basis of an artwork. From plaques you will walk past every time you visit the centre to the surfaces we all walk on – the city is full of interesting textures which tell a story about our city.
The third video takes place in Avenham Park with Brendan showing us how we can use the textures in our local parks to take rubbings and create artwork.
Following this video Lancashire based artist Brendan discusses how the community inspires him to create art and collage. He touches on some famous artists including Picasso and how they used collage in their work.
In the fifth video Brendan shows us how we can use collage and newspapers to create a commentary on social issues and raise important issues within our community, something he does in his own art.
In the final video in Brendan Bunting’s commission for The Living City and it shows us how we can exhibit the artwork we have created without needing a fancy studio. This video is a short guide into different creative methods of sharing your work with the community.
